Work in Bishopton

The new development

The large housing development on the former ordnance site has brought a lot of new build into Bishopton, much of it rendered from new.

New render work here is usually one of two things: finishing something the build left, such as a garage, a boundary wall or a garden wall, or putting right an area that has cracked or marked in the first few years. New build render cracks along block joints when the backing coat was rushed, and it shows up early.

The older village

The older part of Bishopton is a different proposition: stone and traditional build, with harl or render over it, and all the usual questions about letting a solid wall breathe.

We treat those as their own job rather than as a smaller version of a modern one, because the build up is not the same and a modern approach on an old solid wall traps water in it.

Extensions and garden walls

Plenty of the work round here is an extension or a garage that needs rendering to match the house, or retaining and boundary walls round a new patio.

Garden walls are exposed on both faces and sit in the ground, so they need a different build up and a proper detail at the top. Rendered to the top edge with nothing over it, they look ruined inside two winters.

Straight answers

Questions about work in Bishopton

My new build render has hairline cracks. Is that normal?

Some fine cracking settles out. Cracking that runs along the lines of the blocks behind is telling you about the backing coat and is worth looking at properly rather than filling.

Can you match the render on a new build estate house?

Usually close. Tell us the developer and the finish and we will look at it before we promise anything.
