Rain off the Clyde

Greenock sits on the south bank of a wide firth with nothing between the houses and the weather coming up it. Driving rain hits a wall far harder than rain falling on one, and it finds every hairline crack in a coat.

That is why so much of the exterior work here is a failed coat rather than a tired one. A wall that would have lasted another ten years inland has water behind it, and once it is behind it the only answer is to take the coat off and start again.

West and south west facing gables go first, every time.

The older stone and the post war stock

The town has a lot of older stone property, built when the shipyards were working, alongside post war estates up the hill.

Those are two different jobs. A solid stone wall has to be allowed to let moisture out, so what goes on it has to breathe; a block built post war semi has no such requirement and takes a straightforward re-dash.

Inside work

The same weather that gets into a wall shows up inside it, so a fair amount of the interior work here starts as making good after damp has been dealt with.

Skimming, ceilings and Artex removal, same as anywhere, with the difference that it is worth finding out what let the water in before covering the evidence.
