What we did
Swirled Artex on the ceiling and a chimney breast that had been papered and painted more times than anybody could count.
The Artex was treated and overboarded rather than scraped, then taped and skimmed flat. Scraping Artex creates dust you do not want in a lived in room, and on a ceiling of this age the safer assumption is that you leave it where it is and cover it properly.
The cracks across the ceiling were taped before skimming. Skim straight over a live crack and it will be back through the new finish within a season.
