What we did
The house and its extension were plain red brick, and the owner wanted the whole thing to read as one building rather than as a house with a box stuck on the side.
We dashed everything in a white mix and left the corner pillars and the base course in charcoal brick. Keeping those dark gives the elevation its corners back. Dash the whole lot and a square house goes flat; leave the uprights in and the eye has something to hold on to.
The extension and the original walls take the dash slightly differently because they are not the same age or the same block, so the backing coat does the work of getting them level before anything decorative goes near them.
