Taking a dashed house flat
The common smooth render job in Glasgow is not a new wall, it is an old dashed one. The dash comes off, the wall is brought genuinely flat, and the render goes on in coats with a mesh in the base.
Flat is harder than textured, which is the opposite of what most people assume. A dash hides a wall that is out by a few millimetres; a flat silicone finish in low sun shows every one of them, so the preparation is most of the job and most of the price.
Silicone, monocouche or sand and cement
Silicone thin coat comes coloured through, stays cleaner and does not want painting. Monocouche is one coat, through coloured, scraped back. Sand and cement rendered and painted is the traditional answer and the cheapest in materials, and it will want repainting.
Which is right depends on the wall behind and on how long you intend to be in the house, so it is a conversation rather than a default.
Why the first few weeks matter
A fresh render carries water and has to give it up slowly. Hot sun on a south elevation dries the face before the body of it, and frost in the first days can ruin a wall that looked finished.
So we work to the weather rather than to the diary, and we will move a day rather than put a coat on that we know is going to be frosted that night.
What else the walls in Glasgow are like
Out from the centre the city is full of inter war bungalows and post war semis, a lot of them roughcast, and a lot of them within a short run of us.
Artex is almost a given in those houses: ceilings, and often the hallway walls as well. Taking that flat is one of the jobs we do most.
If you are outside the city, we work across Renfrewshire and up to twenty miles from Renfrew. See the areas we cover.

Roughcasting Masterclass
I can’t recommend McLellans Master Plasters highly enough. They rough casted our house to an excellent standard and also fixed our neighbour’s guttering and roofing, all for a very reasonable price. From start to finish they were prompt, professional, and reliable. Communication was clear, the work was carried out efficiently, and the finish looks fantastic. It’s refreshing to deal with tradespeople who take real pride in their work and deliver exactly what they promise. If you’re looking for high-quality workmanship at a fair price, McLellans Master Plasters are a brilliant choice.
Fantastic Job All Round
I recently hired Fraser from McLellans Master Plasterers. The quality of the plastering was brilliant the finish is perfectly smooth, clean, and ready for decorating. He paid great attention to detail and made sure everything was completed to an exceptionally high standard. He kept everything neat and left the place spotless once the job was done, which I really appreciated. If you’re looking for a plasterer who delivers top quality workmanship with great customer service, I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Fraser at McLellans Master Plasterers. A fantastic job all round!

Questions about smooth render in Glasgow
Can I have smooth render over the dash that is already there?
We would not. Rendering over an old dash means the new finish is only as well stuck as the coat underneath it, and old dash is usually the thing that failed in the first place. It also leaves a very thick build up at every reveal and sill.
Does smooth render crack?
Any render can crack. What matters is whether it cracks because the wall behind it is moving, which is a building issue, or because the render was put on too thick, too fast or in the wrong weather, which is a rendering issue. Beads at the corners and openings and a properly levelled backing coat deal with most of the second kind.
What colours can I have?
The jobs in our work section are white, cream and grey, which is most of what gets asked for. Through coloured renders come in a wider range than that, and the colour is in the material rather than painted on afterwards, so there is nothing to repaint.
Do you do tenement closes and common work?
Ring us and tell us what is being proposed and who is organising it. Common work goes through a factor or the owners together, and that changes how it has to be quoted.
What is silicone render?
A thin coat system: a basecoat with mesh, then a through coloured topcoat that stays flexible and sheds water. It needs no painting and it is the most expensive of the three common systems.
What is monocouche render?
A through coloured one coat render, scraped back to an even texture. The colour is in the material so there is nothing to repaint.
